This is a high tide picture of Herring Cove taken from the Tongass Hwy bridge looking east. I was there in June-July '08 and actually never saw this happen. It looked liked a small creek where I photographed black bear foraging along it, pretty much at the center of the water shown here. It is definitely not a pond, but the ebb and flow of the ocean tide. Tidal flow can be as much as 15'-18' difference between high and low tide in this area, which at a high tide can look like this. BTW, Google maps shows this area totally covered in water, including the houses and fish hatchery in the far right rear of the photo.
